The texts we wish we'd gotten.

ReadyHome started at Danielle's kitchen table in Sarasota, the week after a September storm knocked the power out on our street for four days. We weren't careless. Between night shifts, school runs and aging parents, nobody ever reminded us at the moment it mattered.

So Danielle and Ravi, neighbors three doors apart, built the reminder they wanted: one small task, sent when it's due, to the phone you already check.

How it started, in texts

On the left, what happened. On the right, the text that would have helped.

  1. The storm took the power out for four days.

On the first night, Danielle found every flashlight in the house with dead batteries. The weather radio was in the attic, still in its box.

The text that would have helped

ReadyHome: Storms Thursday. Tonight, test your flashlights and charge your power banks. About 10 min. Reply DONE when finished.

  2. The fridge became a guessing game.

By day two, Ravi stood at his fridge with the door open, trying to remember the rule. We threw out half of it, and probably should have thrown out more.

The text that would have helped

ReadyHome: Power's been out 4+ hours. A closed fridge keeps food safe about 4 hours, a full freezer about 48. Keep both shut.

  3. Ravi's parents couldn't reach him.

On day three, his mom called 14 times on a jammed network from 20 minutes away, sure something was wrong. Nobody had a plan for who calls whom.

The text that would have helped

ReadyHome: Pick one out-of-state contact everyone texts if local lines are busy. Save them in every phone. About 5 min.

  4. We built the reminder we wanted.

Six weeks later, we wrote 40 texts on a legal pad and sent them by hand to our own families for a season. When our neighbors asked to be added, it became ReadyHome.

The text that would have helped

ReadyHome: Welcome! Your first task: look up your ZIP's evacuation zone and save it. About 2 min. Reply DONE when finished.

Danielle Okafor

Co-founder · product and texts

Danielle spent nine years as an ER nurse, where she saw what happens when a family's plan only lives in one person's head. She lives in Sarasota with her husband, two kids, and a dog who hates thunder.

Ravi Mehta

Co-founder · operations and the shop

Ravi ran logistics for a regional grocery chain, so he thinks about expiry dates more than most people. He looks after his parents, who still don't text back fast.
